Challenges facing rural communities

Although we have had a few days recently of rain, a statewide drought advisory was issued on Oct. 11. This was issued with hopes to increase awareness of current conditions and warn localities, water suppliers and residents to prepare for a potential significant drought event.

In the 59th District, Buckingham County has already begun taking measures. On Oct. 15 Buckingham County implemented a county-wide burn ban.

I spent a good portion of last week traveling the district and meeting with constituents.

I was able to meet with several area directors of the rural offices of Social Services in Virginia alongside Del. Tommy Wright. They were able to express the unique needs that they face, needs that other parts of Virginia do not have to combat. I look forward to meeting again and working with our local offices to help them get the resources they need to be successful in helping our families and communities in rural Virginia.

I was also able to stop by Appomattox County, where schools are all accredited, and visit the middle school to meet with staff as they gave an update on the school and new programs that are being implemented to help students who are struggling in classroom environments.

I am truly proud to have Appomattox County School system in my district. The administrators, educators and staff are top notch, and it really shows how much they care about their students and community.

I have supported increased funding for public schools and higher teacher pay, all while adopting reforms to the SOLs and making sure more money is spent in the classroom. Our teachers and school systems are crucial to the future of children, and I will continue to support any measure that strengthens Virginia schools.

We are 15 days from the 2019 election.

It has been my honor to serve the 59th District for the past eight years as your rural, common sense conservative voice. I look forward to continuing that service on Nov. 5 as I ask for your vote.

I encourage you to keep in touch with me and my office. I will be spending the coming weeks meeting and visiting with various groups, businesses and constituents.
