The Redbud Garden Club held its July meeting at Ann Ligon’s home with Janet Higgins as co-hostess. The guest speaker for the evening was Jimmy Hurt who gave an informative and entertaining talk on craftsman homes. He gave examples of Sears homes in and around Farmville in a computer slide program. Hurt gave the history on how individuals purchased the kits, how the kits were delivered by freight, the cost of purchasing the kits, and how the homes were assembled. Sears not only sold the kits but eventually evolved into selling everything that a home would need, including vacuum cleaners, lights and lawnmowers.
Arrangements for the month included “Freedom,” designer’s choice with an arrangement in an unusual container. Members used their imagination as containers ranged from a sieve, high topped laced shoe, rocking chair, lab flask, electrical insulator and seashell. The other arrangement was “Singular Sensation” using a single or cluster blossom in a glass container.
Members enjoyed trading stories and thoughts on combating Japanese beetles, insects, extreme heat and drought. Oh, and the trials and tribulations of gardening at its best.
