Rebuilding after lightning strike

A new barn to replace one that had been struck by lightning in Cumberland is making rapid progress, thanks to members of the surrounding Amish communities and area vendors.

The barn, according to Golden Valley Farms LLC Office Manager Faye Honebein in a previous report, could be rebuilt by Friday.

The lumber, Honebein said Wednesday, came from Cumberland Building Supply, the sawmills from Cumberland, Dillwyn and Charlotte Court House and the trusses came from DL Trusses in Pennsylvania.

The recently-refurbished barn by Golden Valley Farms was struck by lightning Sunday evening on Asal Road.

Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department, Farmville Volunteer Fire Department, Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department, Prospect Volunteer Fire Department and Hampden- Sydney Volunteer Fire Department responded to the incident.

A GoFundMe has been established to mitigate the expenses related to the lightning strike and fire.

According to the GoFundMe page, the barn that was destroyed housed all of the supplies needed to operate the barn’s Herd Share Program, which included coolers for the milk, dairy products that were sold and a walk-in freezer full of meat.
