Meeting set for administration

The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors voted to extend its regular Tuesday meeting and met Thursday, 7 p.m., to discuss the County Administrator/County Attorney positions.
The meeting was continued from Tuesday’s regular Board of Supervisors meeting.
Vivian Seay Giles, the current County Administrator and County Attorney, presented her resignation in April. She said during the Tuesday meeting the county would need an administrator before that following Monday.
The matter was also discussed in closed session during the regular board meeting. Giles and District One Supervisor William “Bill” Osl said a legal question would need to be addressed before any decision was made.
The result of the Thursday meeting occurred after The Herald’s press time. Updates can be found at farmvilleherald. com.
Supervisors commended Giles for her service during the board member comment period.
“I’d like to send a great amount of appreciation to Ms. Giles for the way she has conducted business for Cumberland County,” District Three Supervisor Kevin Ingle said, speaking about her professional experience in representing Cumberland. “(I) wish you the very best wherever you go, and I know you’re going to be great.”
“We’ve been fortunate to have you,” District One Supervisor William “Bill” Osl said. “I wish you well in your future endeavors.”
District Two Supervisor Lloyd Banks commended Giles for her dedication to the county.
“She put in a lot of effort and time, and we appreciate what you do,” Banks said.
“Ms. Giles, thank you for what you’ve done,” Board Chairman David Meinhard said.
A round of applause was given by members of the board and by the audience.
Meinhard suggested a motion during the meeting to retain Giles as county attorney until Jan. 1 via Sands Anderson, and to appoint Planning & Zoning Director J.P. Duncan as interim county administrator.
Ingle said he would be in favor, but recommended potentially having Cumberland Senior Executive Assistant Sierra Duncan be in a position unrelated to county administration.
“I believe the motion sounds a little premature,” Banks said.
“We need to look at these things practically and logically,” he said.
Meinhard said Banks previously suggested J.P. Duncan.
Banks said he had suggested it at one time. “That was long before the staff we currently have.”
Osl suggested that the issue be discussed in closed session until a decision was made.
