Portions of the High Bridge Trail State Park, which received extensive repairs due to the effects of Tropical Storm Michael, have reopened to the public, according to Park Manager Daniel Jordan.

Jordan said Friday that all of the three culverts that saw extensive damage due to the storm have been repaired. A previous report cited that the repairs were estimated at nearly $1 million.

“We have a little finish work left to do, but the trail’s back open,” Jordan said.

A segment of the trail located 2.2 miles from the downtown Farmville entrance had been closed due to the collapse of the Rochelle Culvert during Tropical Storm Michael, creating a washout spanning 25 feet that was 25 feet deep and 50 feet long.

“That was by far the largest project of all five,” Jordan said. “So we did that one first.”

Additionally, Jordan said repairs took place eastbound in the Moran area, at Orchard Road, and in the Rice area of the trail. Moran and Orchard also contained culverts.

“A lot of earth moved, new pipes put in,” Jordan said, describing some of the repairs at the trail. “Hopefully these three culverts will never be an issue for us again.”

“The weather, even though it’s been raining, has been pretty favorable for us to get things done,” Jordan said. “We’re excited to be back open.”
