Prince Edward County High School’s varsity track and field program garnered a variety of honors this week as a result of performances in the 2019 James River District (JRD) Track and Field Championships held Tuesday at Nottoway High School.
The Prince Edward boys team won with a total of 96.50 points, topping Cumberland County High School, which placed second with 90 points, and Buckingham County High School, which placed third with 83.50 points.
Eagles junior Abdul Johnson’s individual performance earned him the title of JRD Track Athlete of the Year, and Prince Edward Track and Field Head Coach James Baker was named JRD Boys Coach of the Year.
Prince Edward nearly won both team titles as the Lady Eagles finished with 110 points, just two points behind winner Goochland High School. Lady Eagles sophomore Haniyyah Johnson, sister to Abdul, was also named the JRD Track Athlete of the Year. The title of JRD Female Field Athlete of the Year went to Prince Edward junior Makayla Morris.
Prince Edward won a total of 11 events between its boys and girls teams. Cumberland’s varsity boys and girls team recorded five first-place finishes, and Buckingham’s varsity boys and girls teams produced four first-place finishes.
Buckingham’s boys 4×800-meter relay team featured junior Tyler Moore, senior Daquan Tindall, junior Ian Martin and junior Dalton Stuple and won with a time of 9:02.18.
“They also broke the school record for the 4×800 relay,” Buckingham Head Coach Michael Lloyd said. “The previous mark was set by the same group last year.”
