Armed Forces Week was held the week of May 13-17, and May 18 was Armed Forces Day, a national holiday established by President Harry S. Truman. Cumberland Commonwealth’s Attorney Pat Scales hosted a ceremony as part of the tribute to American soldiers serving around the world in observance of Armed Forces Week. A group of Cumberland Middle School students wrote letters, notes and cards to American soldiers expressing gratitude for their service to the nation. The ceremony’s attendees included, pictured from left, Cumberland Sheriff Darrell Hodges, Alan Blakey from American Legion Post 269, Scales and William Knolls, also with American Legion Post 269.
