The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors presented a resolution to the owners of Blanton & Pleasants general store, located at 2308 Cartersville Road. Blanton & Pleasants is celebrating its 90th anniversary, having opened in 1929.
“Blanton & Pleasants has served as a social hub, a community service provider, a site for community fundraising, a home for local hunting and fishing enthusiasts, and a provider of goods and services to community members and visitors alike,” the resolution cited.
The resolution praised the efforts of the general store, which remained thriving even after the rise and fall of the national economy and the growing influence of chain stores and supermarkets.
Giles said May 14 a formal copy of the resolution was not available at the meeting but would be hand-delivered to the storeowners.
Board members voted unanimously to approve the resolution. Audience members and board members applauded after the resolution was approved.
“(There’s) been a lot of good years,” storeowner June Pleasants said during the resolution.
Store owner James “Spanky” Pleasants encouraged community members to attend the store’s 90th anniversary celebration held May 18, which featured music, sales, giveaways, a car show, area vendors, a bounce house and kids activities, and a free lunch.
“It’s a community event,” James said.
