Buckingham County High School’s varsity boys soccer team earned a landmark win Monday night to further cement this as a groundbreaking season.
Knights Head Coach Brett Whittington made it clear how excited he was a few weeks ago with his team’s success just four games into the season.
“The last two years, we’ve gotten off to really slow starts,” he said. “I think we’ve won five games combined in the last two years, so to be 2-1-1 after the first four is really a good feeling.”
Buckingham is now 6-2-1 and ranked No. 2 in the James River District behind only undefeated Goochland High School.
“This has been a blast so far,” Whittington said Monday.
And Monday’s victory was a perfect exclamation point as the Knights won 3-2 in overtime against host and perennial district title contender Prince Edward County High School (4-3).
Whittington said that right now, the win over the Eagles “means pretty much everything. It’s pretty big. I’m proud of the kids. They’ve worked really hard to get to this point, and it’s a really good feeling, because that’s been a team that’s been at the top of the district for a long time, and to actually get one against them, I think it’s been four years since we’d beaten them.”
Senior Josh Kodi scored the winning goal in the second overtime session. Sophomore Emmanuel Whittington scored Buckingham’s first two goals during regulation.
