Breakfasting for a good cause

After severe storms rocked the Heart of Virginia last Friday, people were rewarded with a mild, sunny morning on Saturday. Those who attended the pancake breakfast fundraiser, organized by the Rotary Club of Farmville and held at The Woodland Inc., also enjoyed good food and great company.
Club member Sue Carter estimated the Rotary raised between $800-$1,000 during the event.

This year’s fundraiser benefited the Southside Center for Violence Prevention (SCVP), the parent organization of Madeline’s House, which shelters victims of domestic abuse and offers resources and services for those affected by sexual assault and abuse.
During the fundraiser, participants had their choice of pancakes, eggs, sausage, fresh fruit, bacon, crepes and specialty drinks such as mimosas and bloody marys.
The bunny-shaped pancakes were Rotary Club member Jennifer Fraley’s idea. She poured batter onto the griddle, using a ladle to get the shape of the long ears just right.
The pancake breakfast fundraiser is estimated to have occurred for approximately two decades.
Rotary Representative Bill Bergen said the club contacted SCVP about what the organization needed. He said the rotary tries to donate and raise money for items that citizens may not realize are necessities. Items the nonprofit needed, such as storage containers, are set to be provided by the rotary through its fundraising efforts.
