Accepting the invitation of the Longwood University Women’s Basketball Team and staff, along with Longwood University Athletics, Piedmont Senior Resources Area Agency on Aging (PSR) recently transported nearly 20 seniors from three counties to the final women’s basketball game at Longwood for the season.
The event took place Saturday, March 2, in Longwood’s Willett Hall.
Senior Day, which saw the celebration of seniors who play on the team, allowed for senior citizens to come from across the region with their admission fee waived.
“This was our first field trip to a Longwood basketball game, and our senior clients had a ball,” said Jordan Miles, Director of Nutrition and Transportation for PSR. “The seniors arrived with smiles on their faces, but left with laughter and good memories after rooting for the teams, offering unsolicited advice to the coaches and players, and often standing up and dancing to see if they could win a free Longwood T-shirt or other souvenir. It was great fun, and netted lots of chuckles.”
The event drew PSR clients from Farmville, Buckingham and Amelia. For most of the seniors, it was the first time they had ever attended a college basketball game.
“We are so very thankful to Longwood University, its athletic department staff and the women’s basketball team for allowing the seniors to come enjoy themselves,” Miles said. “It truly is an experience they never will forget.”
PSR, in partnership with Longwood Athletics, is now collaborating on seniors attending a baseball game in the spring.
