Six for ‘The Show’

Cumberland County High School’s varsity wrestling team was David in a David-and-Goliath-type scenario last weekend at the super-regional tournament in Mathews. Similar to David, the Dukes proved mighty, placing seventh out of 13 teams despite being able to compete in only six of the 14 weight classes.

Just six wrestlers comprised Cumberland’s team, meaning other squads had many more opportunities to score points, but the Dukes made their opportunities count as all six qualified for the state tournament by placing within the top six of their respective weight classes.

“The kids performed really well,” Cumberland Head Coach Paul Dixon said.

Leading the way was senior heavyweight Kaijhaun Trent, who won the regional title in the 285-pound class.

“He only had to wrestle a total of about two minutes the whole weekend,” Dixon said. “He had a bye in the first round. In the quarterfinals, he had a kid he pinned in the first, and then in the finals, he had a kid he pinned in (45) seconds.”

Trent’s overall season record is 24-2.

At super-regionals, Dukes placing third included junior 132-pounder Trequan Trent and junior 152-pounder Trevor Dayton. Cumberland junior 120-pounder Lamard Jackson finished fourth, junior 220-pounder Thomas Trowbridge placed fifth and freshman 145-pounder Sabian Luchynsky ended up fifth.

Now the Dukes prepare for what they have called “The Show” — the Virginia High School League Class 1 state tournament, set for Friday and Saturday at the Salem Civic Center.
