Buckingham County High School’s varsity girls basketball team pulled away from defending district regular season champion Prince Edward County High School on Tuesday night to claim the 2018-19 James River District (JRD) regular season championship with a 47-37 home win.

The No. 1 Lady Knights (16-4, 14-2 JRD) and the No. 2 Lady Eagles (15-3, 13-3 JRD) will each host district tournament semifinal games Saturday at 7 p.m., with the final set for Monday.

Prince Edward won the first meeting with Buckingham this season, 52-50, at home Jan. 9. The Lady Eagles have not been 100 percent healthy as of late, with junior guard and second-leading scorer Ke’Mya Rux and senior center Madison Lehman struggling with injuries, but the team made things competitive Tuesday.

Buckingham led only 29-27 entering the fourth quarter before pulling away.

Lady Knights Head Coach Kelly Chambers said Wednesday that in this game, as opposed to the Jan. 9 meeting, her players “were better prepared and executed (the) game plan, and we had multiple girls who were in double digits last night, scoring, and I think that was a big key factor. And then just defensively, we were able to make some stops and then get the ball in transition.”

Senior guard Shamari Wingfield and freshman forward Lauren Randolph had 14 points apiece, while senior guard Jayda Chambers added 12.
