John Berman ‘Jack’ Murphy Jr.

John Berman “Jack” Murphy Jr. was born in Crewe, Virginia, on April 18, 1934, to John Berman and Katherine Irene Kelley Murphy and passed on January 23, 2019. On September 10, 1955, he and Alice Christine Newman were married. Alice survives Jack, along with their three children, Laura Goetz, now of Midlothian, VA; Susan Bosovich and her husband, Daniel, now of Wyoming, MI; and John B. Murphy III, now of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and his wife, Gabriella; and seven grandchildren; Carter Goetz Neil and her husband David, and Kyler Goetz, Alicia Bosovich Bertilini and her husband, Matt, Nicholas Bosovich, and Allison and Conner Murphy and grandson thru marriage, Max Kuchen. Jack is also survived by his brother, Robert Sidney Murphy, and his wife, the former Mary Kay Catlin, currently of Glen Allen, VA.
Jack is a veteran of military service in the US Army. He is an engineering graduate in the class of 1955 of Virginia Tech and remained a strong supporter of his HOKIES. He spent most of his working career with Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Staunton, VA, Gettysburg and Pittsburgh PA and Grand Rapids, MI. Jack and Alice retired to Wintergreen, a ski and golf resort in Nelson County VA, where they lived for 24 wonderful years. He was an elder and member of Rockfish Presbyterian Church and was active in community activities such as Habitat for Humanity and Christmas in April, now called Rebuilding Together, where he could use his interest and skills in woodworking. He had a lifelong love of music and art – especially the music and art of his wife, Alice.
A memorial service will be held at Rockfish Presbyterian Church in Nellysford, VA on Saturday April 13, 2019. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to Rockfish Presbyterian Church for mission trips, Habitat for Humanity, or the Fuller Center for Housing.
