Prince Edward County High School’s varsity indoor track and field team produced some highlights at the New Year’s Opener hosted by Fork Union Military Academy.

“It was good competition there with the field of 15 teams, so I was pleased with the performance of the kids,” Prince Edward Head Coach James Baker said.

Lady Eagles junior Makayla Morris headlined Prince Edward’s group of high finishers by winning the girls high jump with a 5-foot 4-inch leap.

“She is ranked No. 1 in (Virginia High School League Class 2),” Baker said. “She also finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet, 7 (1/2) inches.”

In her first indoor track competition this season, sophomore Haniyyah Johnson placed second in the girls 55-meter dash with a time of 7.46 seconds.

“This time currently has her as the No. 1 time in (Class 2),” Baker said.

The Lady Eagles 4×200-meter relay team finished second with a time of one minute, 55 seconds.

“This time ranks them second in (Class 2) behind East Rockingham,” Baker said.

Prince Edward’s relay team was comprised of Morris, Johnson, senior Salma Muhammad and junior Naomi Jones.

Junior Abdul Johnson earned third-place finishes in the boys long jump and the boys 55-meter dash, producing a 20-3 jump and a 6.78-second time, respectively.

“His 55-meter time ranks him at No. 2 in (Class 2),” Baker said.

Muhammad placed fifth in the girls 55 with a 7.81-second time, and Baker noted she is ranked eighth in Class 2.

With a 1:30.25 time in the girls 500-meter dash, Jones claimed fifth.

“All of these individuals have qualified to participate in the indoor state track meet in February,” Baker said.
