A fire at a closed sawmill at 3391 Piney Ridge Road in the Pamplin area resulted in a total loss of a building.

Barry Vanderveer, president of Pamplin Volunteer Fire & Emergency Medical Services (EMS), said the fire was reported approximately 3 a.m. Thursday morning.

The cause of fire was not known as of Thursday. Vanderveer said there was no one at site.

Four volunteer fire departments responded, Vanderveer said, which included fire departments from Pamplin, Appomattox, Darlington Heights and Prospect.

Vanderveer said the departments had the fire under control by 6:30 a.m., but firefighters remained at the scene until approximately 10 a.m. to clear up the site.

Vanderveer said water from dry hydrants and water from the Town of Pamplin were used to douse the fire.

Vanderveer and Town of Pamplin Mayor William Horton said the use of town water resulted in reports of little or no water pressure early Thursday morning, something Horton said was resolved once the town received reports and town officials dispatched a technician.
