The Heart of Virginia Free Clinic at 1702 S. Main St. in Farmville sustained damage after a vehicle struck the building Tuesday evening.
According to a statement from the Farmville Police Department, the department responded to the crash close to 8 p.m.
Police said a 2017 Ford Focus was traveling southbound, and crossed the northbound lane of traffic.
Police said the vehicle left the roadway, struck a fence, shrubs and eventually came to rest inside of the building.
The driver was identified as Frances L. Booth, age 44, of Wylliesburg. Police reported that Booth was not injured following the accident.
“Significant damage was sustained to both the vehicle and the structure,” police said.
No charges have been issued to the driver. Police said the driver reportedly suffered a seizure that caused loss of control of the vehicle.
Pat Payne with the Heart of Virginia Free Clinic said she, a doctor, two nurses and patients were in the building and waiting room when the accident occurred.
She said she heard a loud noise and ran into the waiting room to investigate. Those in the waiting room jumped to the other end of the room.
She said the doctor and nurses ran outside to check on the driver.
Payne said the clinic was closed Wednesday as she and another representative worked to clean up the inside of the building, which included sustained damage to the brick at the front of the building, a window and the door to the basement.
Payne said she and the landlord are waiting on an estimate from an insurance company concerning the damage.
Though she said she and those in the clinic were shaken up, they were appreciative of the response from the Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Farmville Police Department, the town manager and others.
“It was just a terrific response,” Payne said.
“We were OK, we’re all OK,” Payne said, “and thankful for it.”
