Lingering effects of the recent major winter storm have led to a delay in the varsity girls basketball event originally planned for this weekend at Cumberland County High School.
Cumberland Athletics Director Alfonso Bell said the Lady Dukes’ annual Christmas tournament has been postponed as Randolph-Henry High School, one of the tourney’s four participants, was not in school Friday. A post on Charlotte County Public Schools’ Facebook page confirmed they were closed Friday for students and staff due to continued hazardous driving conditions.
The two-day event is set to feature four varsity girls teams: Prince Edward County High School, Randolph-Henry, Altavista High School and the Lady Dukes. Friday was intended to feature the Lady Eagles taking on the Lady Colonels at 6 p.m., and junior guard Nikki Hurt, pictured above, and the rest of the Lady Dukes playing the Lady Statesmen at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the two teams to lose the day prior were to face off at 6 p.m. in the consolation game, and the prior day’s winners were to play in the championship game at 8 p.m.
“We are trying to reschedule later,” Bell said, highlighting the importance of each team not losing two games off of their schedules.
