The Firemen’s Sports Arena was packed with toys, clothing and books for those ranging from infancy to 18 years old Wednesday. The Prince Edward Christmas Mother held its distribution day, an event roughly six months in the making.
Parents filled out applications that included the ages of their children. Volunteers working as personal shoppers guided parents through the arena to tables with gifts that best matched the ages of the children the parents were shopping for.
Area businesses also provided coffee and donuts for parents and volunteers.
According to volunteers Kerry Mossler and Joy Stump, parents chose toys and winter clothing such as hats, gloves and socks for children.
Mossler and Stump said the toys were of really good quality and mentioned there had been bicycles available earlier in the day.
Christmas Mother President Lauren Showalter said the first toy drive for this year’s distribution took place in July. Since then, Christmas Mother, as well as area churches and organizations, have held drives and raised funds for the distribution.
Showalter said they initially planned to use Monday and Tuesday as days to organize all of the toys before the distribution. Showalter said they were snowed out Monday, meaning they had to do the equivalent of two days worth of work Tuesday.
Christmas Mother officials said 210 children received toys in the first hour of the distribution, which started at 9 a.m. They estimate that the Christmas Mother will provide toys for close to 300 children.
