With the title on the line

Hampden-Sydney College’s (H-SC) football team will host archrival Randolph-Macon College on Saturday with the winner claiming the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship and its accompanying automatic berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

This will be the 123rd edition of the Oldest Small-School Rivalry in the South, otherwise known simply as “The Game.” Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

The Tigers (4-4, 4-2 ODAC) enter this showdown fresh off a 24-20 road win over Washington and Lee University last week that was sealed when H-SC sophomore linebacker Brendan Weinberg forced and recovered a fumble as the Generals appeared poised to score the winning touchdown in the waning moments.

Tigers Head Coach Marty Favret expressed excitement about having the opportunity to play for the ODAC title.

“I felt like we hit the lottery twice Saturday — winning the game the way we did with the fumble inside the one, and then finding out that Ferrum had upset Macon, which gives us a chance,” he said. “It’s been since 1984 that ‘The Game’ here is winner-take-all. We’ve gone over there a few times in those situations and been successful, but to be able to do it here at home is pretty neat for the community, and hopefully our students come out in force.”

Hampden-Sydney defeated Washington and Lee without the services of outstanding freshman running back Kaleb Smith, who was injured in the game at Ferrum College on Oct. 27.

“Right now he’s very questionable for Macon,” Favret said Monday.
