Veterans Day luminary

On Saturday, Nov. 10, at Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, staff, volunteers and period-dressed living historians will be hosting its annual “Veterans Day Luminary” commemorative trail walk.
Two, evening time, ranger-guided hikes will leave from the historic Hillsman House and take visitors along the newly established “Wheaton Trail’, located behind the house. Eight separate stops posted on the hiking trail will feature living historians, each providing a brief, first-person account of a specific portion of the Battles of Sailor’s Creek. Over 500 candlelit luminaries will line the trail representing the life of a Northern or Southern soldier who gave their last full measure in the final major engagement of the war in Virginia.
The first luminary tour will begin promptly at 6 p.m., with the second starting at 7 p.m. Each guided hike will last approximately 45 minutes. In addition, the Hillsman House will be open to visitors from 6-8 p.m. There is no admission fee for this family-friendly event. The guided hikes will take place after sunset, so visitors are highly encouraged to dress accordingly for potentially cold temperatures, and wear appropriate footwear for walking along a grass and dirt-covered hiking trail with moderate changes in elevation.
