THE WORD: A habit of giving thanks

“It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High. “ Psalm 92: 1. KJV.
The designated day of Thanksgiving unto the Lord is celebrated throughout different nations, cities, hamlets, counties, villages, and towns. Much special preparation takes place for this day of “giving thanks” and then life continues its journey. Inscribed in verse 1 of Psalm 92 “giving thanks” is the storyline, however, it also suggests that giving thanks unto the lord is not only a good thing but should be a habit. That is, it should be a part of everyday life.
In my time of meditating on the finalization of this article, I made a trip to the grocery store and upon my return while sitting at the traffic light I saw a car which had inscribed on the license plate, “THANK M.” That was truly a blessed moment and divine confirmation.
I believe that a countless number of people throughout the land make special preparation to gather with family and friends to celebrate the day of Thanksgiving and pause and take a special moment of maybe reading of scripture and rendering a prayer. However, one should be reminded that for believers to be thankful brings joy to the heart to our Father in heaven.
Here in this scripture, the Psalmist employs us to not only be thankful but develop the habit of being thankful along our daily journey of life by singing praises unto his name. This enables us to overcome negative inclinations and will lead us to face life with a positive and benevolent attitude. For believers to constantly be thankful renders blessings to others whom we encounter. Thus, as the Psalmist cries out, “it is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto His Name.”
It is good to give thanks to God for being the awesome God he is. We should be thankful for our Father who revealed his love in the Son who abides with us at all times in the person of the Holy Spirit. We should be thankful to God for the fellowship of the church. It is through the church we continuously hear the good news of God’s love and mercies. In the fellowship of the church and the proclamation of God’s word, we receive the strength we need for living a victorious life.
We should give thanks to God for our country and freedom. And certainly, we give thanks to God for our family who has sustained us and help us be who we are. The list goes on. Let giving “Thanks” be a daily habit in your life and continuously sing praises unto His Name.
