NO. 6 CUMBERLAND (0-10) AT NO. 3 CENTRAL (6-4)
Kickoff: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Last meeting: Chargers 48, Dukes 6
2017 playoffs: No. 3 Chargers 56, No. 6 Dukes 20
Coach’s game notes: The Dukes find themselves in a familiar situation, entering the Region 1B playoffs with the sixth and final seed and a winless record to face the No. 3 Chargers for the second straight year. The small size of the region leads to a lower standard of playoff qualification.
The game has been moved up by a day to avoid anticipated rainy weather Friday.
The Chargers are a significantly tough team, and Head Coach Will Thomas does a really good job of coaching them. They have talent at all levels.
Senior guard/defensive tackle Garett Williams is probably one of the better linemen in the district, and senior Jackson Dalton is probably one of the better linebackers in the district. Standing out at running back is junior T’zion Wilkerson.
Central has one of the best defenses Cumberland has played all year. When the teams faced off earlier this season Sept. 21 at Cumberland, the Dukes struggled mightily to move the ball.
In what seems standard for this season of repeated, weather-induced rescheduling, prep time is again abbreviated, but Cumberland will study film and see if it can do anything differently, hoping to create positives to build on for next year.
