An inaugural fall festival in Cumberland is set to offer a cornucopia of activities for children and families, including a coat giveaway for those who need it most.
The festival is scheduled to begin Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Cumberland County Middle School Cafetorium and Gym from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Activities, according to documentation detailing the event, include face painting, balloons, games for children, a bouncy house and a station where participants can take selfies with Santa Claus.
Several Cumberland churches are partnering in the event, in addition to Cumberland Community Cares and the Virginia Cooperative Extension.
Susan Carden with the festival said the idea for the festival started with a coat giveaway that took place at Shiloh New Covenant Church at 665 Anderson Highway five years ago.
Carden said the event grew until 2017, where the congregation gave away approximately 400 coats.
She said the congregation decided to reach out to other churches and organizations, making the giveaway more of a community-centered event.
