Fuqua School’s varsity football team rallied back in the second half against a strong Isle of Wight Academy squad Monday night, but the Chargers were able to hold off the Falcons for a 43-26 victory.
“The kids played well,” Fuqua Head Coach Ben Manis said of his players. “We had some mental mistakes, but again, a Monday game, that kind of stuff kind of happens. But physically, they played hard.”
Isle of Wight led 26-6 at halftime before the Falcons came back in the third quarter.
Fuqua’s Elijah Warner had an outstanding game, finishing with 201 yards passing, including three touchdowns, 68 yards receiving, including a score, and 30 yards rushing. Matt Osborn recorded 150 yards receiving with two touchdowns, and Drew Osborn had 68 yards passing with a score and 18 yards receiving with a score. Jackson Allen registered 31 receiving yards and 26 rushing yards.
Manis noted that rival teams did not put points up on the Chargers when they faced them, which could have an impact when decisions are made regarding playoff spots.
“That makes a big difference,” he said. “We actually put points up on them.”
The Falcons (3-5) close their regular season Friday, hosting Broadwater Academy at 7 p.m.
