Hampden-Sydney College’s (H-SC) golf team started the 2018-19 season off on the right foot. The squad won the two-day 12-team Tom Kinder Memorial Golf Tournament on Tuesday in Harrisonburg by four strokes, producing a one-over-par score of 577. H-SC Head Coach Chad Eisele said, “It was good to get a win in the first tournament of the year. We were very consistent with 132 pars, which was 22 more than the next closest team. Hopefully we can turn some of those pars into birdies in our next tournament.” Individually, Tigers freshmen Hunter Martin and John Hatcher Ferguson finished first and second, respectively, after a one-hole playoff. Martin and Ferguson tied for first, each shooting two-under par, with Ferguson shooting rounds of 69 and 73 and Martin going 70 and 72. Martin birdied the first hole of the playoff to win the event. The Tigers had three other top-15 finishers at Lakeview Golf Club, including sophomore Allen Smith, junior Bruce Shober and junior Adam Hade. On Monday and Tuesday, H-SC is set to participate in the Oglethorpe Invitational at the Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club in Flowery Branch, Georgia.
