Homecoming in Cumberland

Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church located on 14 Fitzgerald Road, Cumberland, will be having Homecoming Sunday, Sept. 30. Worship service will begin at 11 a.m. with special music to feature “Dean Vassar” of Charlotte Court House followed by the morning message. Lunch will be served in the church fellowship hall from noon-2 p.m. Pastor Barry Vassar and the entire congregation welcomes all to attend and bring a friend.
Cumberland County Landfill Awareness Committee will have a community meeting concerning the proposed landfill to learn more and receive information about the stand against this issue. The next meeting will be held Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. at the Cumberland Community Center located at 45 south and Davenport Road.
Payne Memorial UMC located at 1 Stoney Point Road, Cumberland will be hosting a free luncheon and devotional speaker each month from noon-1 p.m. The next scheduled event will be held Oct. 10 with guest speaker the Rev. Irma Watson speaking on the topic “Choosing Life – Being on God’s Side.” Different churches and individuals in the community provide the meals each month.
The Cumberland Community Christmas Mother program is in need of items and volunteers for the 2018 distribution season. In addition to staffing, the following items are needed; new board games (Monopoly, Operation, Trouble, etc.), new socks and clothing items. Donations of new items can be dropped off at Cumberland Social Services Monday-Friday between 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., located at 71 Community Center Drive, Cumberland. Financial contributions (checks) can be made payable to Cumberland Community Christmas Mother and sent to P.O. Box 33, Cumberland, Virginia 23040. Those interested in volunteering can contact Debbie Kennel at (804) 980-5022 or Barbara Daniels at (804) 986-5852. Volunteers are needed for setting up and resetting the shopping rooms as well as assisting shoppers with making selections. We appreciate your ongoing and future support and will be looking forward to your donations and service in the coming months.

The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors monthly meeting is held every second Tuesday unless otherwise announced at 7 p.m. in the Cumberland County Court Room.
Happy birthday wishes are sent out this week to Sherry Midkiff of Cumberland and Linda Shifflett of Dillwyn both having birthdays Saturday, Sept. 22, Ciera Ownby of Dillwyn on Tuesday, Sept. 25, and Virginia Boyles age 86 of Cumberland Thursday, Sept. 27.
Due to Hurricane Florence the 2018 annual fall Miles Family Reunion was rescheduled to Saturday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m. at Golden Corral in Richmond on Southside. All family members and guest are welcome to attend.
Victory Baptist Church located on 157 Dove Lane Spout Springs will be hosting special services Sunday, Sept. 30. Sunday School at 10 a.m. with Bluegrass Gospel Music at its best featuring the “Old Time Gospel Singers” of Crewe. At 10:30 a.m. worship will begin with more great music followed by Pastor Jeff Worley and the morning message.
