Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church located 14 Fitzgerald Road Cumberland will be having Homecoming Sunday. Worship service will begin at 11 a.m. with special music to feature “Dean Vassar” of Charlotte Court House followed by the morning message. Lunch will be served in the church fellowship hall from noon-2 p.m. Pastor Barry Vassar and the entire congregation welcome all to attend.
Cumberland County Landfill Awareness Committee welcomes all citizens of Cumberland County and surrounding counties to a community meeting concerning the proposed landfill to learn more and receive information about the stand against this issue. Payne Memorial UMC located at 1 Stoney Point Road, Cumberland will be hosting a free luncheon and devotional speaker each month from noon-1 p.m. The next scheduled event will be held Wednesday, Oct. 10, with guest speaker the Rev. Irma Watson speaking on the topic “Choosing Life – Being on God’s Side” Various churches and individuals in the community provide the meals each month.
The Cumberland Community Christmas Mother program is in need of items and volunteers for the 2018 distribution season. In addition to staffing, the following items are needed; new board games (Monopoly, Operation, Trouble, etc.), new socks and clothing items. Donations of new items can be dropped off at Cumberland Social Services Monday-Friday between 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. located at 71 Community Center Drive, Cumberland. Financial contributions (checks) can be made payable to Cumberland Community Christmas Mother and can be sent to P.O. Box 33, Cumberland, VA 23040. Those interested in volunteering can contact Debbie Kennel at (804) 980-5022 or Barbara Daniels at (804) 986-5852. Volunteers are needed for setting up and resetting the shopping rooms as well with assisting shoppers with making selections. The committee will meet again Sept. 4 at 9 a.m. in room C-8 at 71 Community Center Drive. Those interested in more information are more than welcome to meet with the committee.

The 2018 Gormus family reunion was held Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Bear Creek Lake Meeting Hall in Cumberland. A nice crowd of family and friends enjoyed a great day of food, fun and fellowship.
The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors monthly meeting is held every second Tuesday unless otherwise announced at 7 p.m. in the Cumberland County Court Room.
Happy birthday wishes are sent out this week to Eloise Senger of Crewe, Friday, Sept. 28; and Patricia Woodfin of Dillwyn, Sunday, Oct. 2.
Due to Hurricane Florence the 2018 annual fall Miles family reunion was rescheduled to Saturday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m. at Golden Corral in Richmond on Southside. All family members and guest are welcome to attend.
Browns Chapel United Methodist Church, located on Route 15 north of Dillwyn on State Route 617 Gravel Hill Road, will be hosting a Ladies Retreat Saturday, from 4-8 p.m. Classes for all ages. Guest speaker is Jenny McIntosh. Dinner to be served. All are welcome.
The Buckingham County Christian Fellowship Association, a nonprofit organization, will be hosting their regular monthly meeting Saturday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. at Shiloh New Covenant Church located on Route 60 approximately 5 miles east of Cumberland Court House, at 665 Anderson Hwy. All members are asked to bring a covered dish for the meal. Following will be the October program with guest speaker for the Gideons, Wayne Davenport. Victory Baptist Church located 157 Dove Lane, Spout Springs will be hosting special services Sunday. Sunday School will begin at 10 a.m. with Bluegrass Gospel Music at its best featuring the “Old Time Gospel Singers” of Crewe.
