The Buckingham County Friends of the Library are hosting another book and bake sale Friday, Sept. 28, from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. to raise money for the new library. This event will take place at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Hall at 14405 W. James Anderson Highway (Route 60) in Buckingham, just west of U.S. Route 15. Delicious baked goods will be available Friday and Saturday. A 50/50 drawing will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. for those willing to test their luck. In addition there will be a wide assortment of books to choose from and many great desserts to take home and enjoy. As usual, book donations will be accepted Friday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon at the VFW Hall.
Have some fun with foods at the Buckingham Extension 4-H program. Learn basic cooking skills, kitchen safety, food safety, and nutrition information while preparing a dish of food to take home. Due to limited oven space, most dishes will need to be baked at home. This program is for youth ages eight and up and will be held at the Buckingham Agriculture Center from 3:40-5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 9, 16, 23 and 30. Participation is limited to 16 youth.
Another exciting Buckingham 4-H program is the beef/cooking challenge. Do you enjoy the television show “Chopped?” These contests (held in the spring) are very similar. Teams of three to five youth (ages 9-19) are given a basket of ingredients and cook a dish using them and some pantry items. In true 4-H form, the teams also develop an oral presentation about the dish, cooking methods, number of servings and nutritional content. The two contests have slight differences, but preparation for them will be together. Fall practice dates will be from 3:40–5:30 p.m. on Fridays, Oct. 5, 19, Nov. 2, 16 and 30, at the Buckingham Agriculture Center. No cost. Youth will prepare food most days, but will not have anything to take home. Participation is limited to 10 youth in each age group. Call the extension office at (434) 969-4261 for more details.
