Recent Longwood University graduate and field hockey all-time great Edel Nyland, who has continued her career at the club level in Germany, was recently named to the Ireland National U23 team for the upcoming 6 Nations Tournament hosted by Royal Antwerp Hockey Club in Belgium.
Nyland, who set the Division I record with her 18-goal junior season in 2016, is making her third National Team appearance and second in as many summers after she competed in the Eurohockey Junior Championship in August 2017 with the U21 team and the U16 squad before becoming a Lancer.
During her time donning the Lancer blue and white, Nyland was a four-time All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) selection, four-time MAC Player of the Week and collected 90 career points on 38 goals and 14 assists.
Slated to play five games — one each against each competing nation, Nyland and Ireland take on India, Netherlands, Canada, Great Britain and Belgium before crossovers begin July 21.
In the Eurohockey Junior Championship last season, Nyland and Ireland faced three tough teams in England, France and Germany in pool play, falling to all three powerhouse squads. All three opponents competed in the 2016 Junior World Cup before taking on Ireland in the Eurohockey Championship.
Nyland and the rest of the Ireland U23 squad get their tournament started with India on Saturday before playing four additional contests over seven days.
