Prince Edward County Courthouse has been evacuated due to a bomb threat. Farmville Police and Longwood Police are responding.
Main Street is blocked to traffic, and police are directing traffic away from Main and South streets.
According to Farmville Police Chief A.Q. “Andy” Ellington, the courthouse has been evacuated and all streets around the courthouse are closed. Virginia State Police will be bringing in bomb techs and canine units shortly.
This is the second bomb threat the courthouse has received in less than two months. A prior bomb threat was reported Thursday, May 24. After investigation of that incident, no bomb was found.
A release from Prince Edward County cited that this new bomb threat was called into the Prince Edward County Combined Courts Office at 12:09 p.m. on Tuesday.
“Virginia State Police have been notified and have deployed explosive-detecting canines,” the release cited. “Prince Edward County Courthouse will be closed until further notice.”
The Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors meeting is still scheduled to take place at 7 p.m., but “as the situation develops, this may be subject to change.”
The incident is being investigated by Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police.
The release cited that if county residents experience an emergency, they should call 911 for service; there will be no disruption of emergency response during this incident. For more information, contact County Administrator Wade Bartlett at (434) 547-8837.
