Firefly festival returns

High Bridge Trail State Park will host the annual Firefly Festival Friday and Saturday, from 9-11 p.m. Attendees can watch thousands of fireflies as warm summer temperatures draw them into the canopy above the Appomattox River in this seasonal mating ritual. Few places in the world offer a better vantage of this spectacular phenomenon than High Bridge. Educational lessons will be offered both evenings; other activities include crafts and trapping insects with local entomologists.
Parking fees apply for this event. The closest access to High Bridge and the overlook is from the Camp Paradise parking area in Prince Edward County. Guests may also choose to walk a mile on the trail from the River Road parking area in Cumberland County. Food trucks will be stationed at both parking locations. For more information, contact the park office at (434) 315-0457 or highbridgetrail@dcr.virginia.gov.
