A single-vehicle accident Saturday was reported without injuries, Farmville Fire Department 2nd Lieutenant Travis Finch said.

The accident, which took place a quarter of a mile east of Layne Street on West Third Street, across from Rod and Staff Welding, temporarily closed the road between Davis GMC and the intersection of Industrial Park Road and Layne Street, Finch and Farmville Chief of Police Andy Q. Ellington said.

The accident took place at 8:52 p.m., Finch said.

“The driver lost control, leaving the roadway, traveling down an embankment and overturned,” Ellington said.

Farmville Fire Department, Prince Edward County Volunteer Rescue Squad and Farmville Police Department responded to the incident.

The Farmville Fire Department used ropes and a stokes basket — a type of stretcher — to remove the driver from the vehicle, Finch said.

Ellington said the road was temporarily closed Sunday morning to remove the 1999 Chevrolet van and traffic was rerouted through Layne Street.

Ellington said the driver, Barbara Jann Weaver, 58, of Farmville, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

“Ms. Weaver was not injured as a result of the accident,” Ellington said.

The roads reopened at approximately 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Finch said.
