Tillett, Umberger get top honors

The valedictorian and salutatorian are the graduates with the highest and second highest grade point averages in the senior class.

VALDICTORIAN

Cumberland High School (CHS) is proud to announce the 2018 Valedictorian, Holly Tillett. Tillett has a 4.91 GPA and plans to attend the University of Virginia (U.Va.) where she was admitted by early decision.

She plans to major in Business & Commerce while at U.Va and aspires to become a future financial analyst in a corporation. She is the daughter of Paul & Wendy Tillett of Cumberland.

Tillett is a member the Student Government Association where she is the president currently and was the vice president last year. She is also in the National Honor Society. She participated on the CHS Forensics and Scholastic Bowl teams for two years.

She is an accomplished dancer who has been performing since the age of three at Five Pointes Dance Center in Farmville. She was a national finalist as a solo performer two years ago.

In November, she received her Academic Jacket for maintaining a 3.25 grade-point average for her high school career. She will be successfully completing the Governor’s School of Southside Virginia and will graduate from Southside Virginia Community College with her associate degree May 12. Tillett will be receiving her Advanced Diploma from CHS May 18.

SALUTATORIAN

Cumberland High School is proud to announce the 2018 Salutatorian, Bobbie Umberger. Umberger has a 4.864 GPA and plans to attend Longwood University in the fall.

She has been accepted into the university’s Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) program which is extremely competitive. Her future goal is to become a Pediatric Registered Nurse.

She is a state finalist for the 2018 Presidential Scholars Program. Umberger is the daughter of Elgie Capps, Jr. of Cumberland. Umberger has been a member the National Honor Society for three years, the Future Business Leaders of America for one year and the Health Occupations Students of America for two years and has served as the organizations vice president last year and is the president currently.

She has worked as a cashier/waitress at a local restaurant for the last two years and has maintained her academics while working over 20 hours a week.

In November, Umberger received her Academic Jacket for maintaining a 3.25 grade-point average for her high school career. She is in her second year of the CHS Certified Nursing Assistant program.

On May 12, she will graduate from Southside Virginia Community College with her associate degree. Umberger will be receiving her Advanced Diploma from CHS May 18.
