According to a previous Herald report, Sarah “Kate” Spry retired at the end of April. Spry served as clerk for five years and has worked in the Cumberland County Circuit Court for 20 years.

Carol Ownby, who attended the ceremony and served as clerk from 1995 to 2013 and as deputy clerk from 1974 until 1995, said she hired Martin and has been impressed by her work ethic.

“Deidre is a very loyal, honest and dedicated employee with a strong work ethic,” Ownby said. “With her experience, she will capably serve the citizens of Cumberland County. She has my support in the upcoming election.”

Martin said she was excited for the opportunity.

“I feel like God has blessed me by allowing me to be the interim clerk right now,” Martin said in a phone interview Monday. “I was truly humbled by everyone who came and the support I received on Friday at the ceremony.”

Martin confirmed she would be running for the circuit court clerk election.

The special election for circuit court clerk will take place Nov. 6.
