Late surge falls short in ODAC tennis title match

Hampden-Sydney College’s No. 3-seeded tennis team fell 5-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament championship against No. 1 Washington and Lee University on Sunday in Norfolk.

This was the Tigers’ first appearance in the championship since 2011.

They reached the final after upsetting No. 2 Guilford College 5-2 on Saturday in the semifinals and topping No. 6 Lynchburg College 5-0 on May 2 in the quarterfinals.

The Generals entered Sunday’s championship match 33-0 against ODAC teams in doubles competition this year and 70-2 over the last two seasons.

The Tigers lost at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles by respective scores of 8-4 and 8-3, but sophomores Clark Cummings and Grayson Burns picked up a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles after leading 7-4, handing the Generals their first and only loss against ODAC doubles teams this year.

Hampden-Sydney concludes the season with 16 wins, the most wins for a Tigers team since before 1993.
