Fuqua School’s varsity baseball and softball teams are following a postseason trajectory similar to the one they traveled on last season, advancing to the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division III state semifinals after their respective tournament quarterfinal games Tuesday.

On the baseball side, the No. 3 Falcons baseball team topped visiting No. 6 Tidewater Academy 5-1, pitting them in a showdown with No. 7 Brunswick Academy on Thursday. First pitch was set for 4 p.m. at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights.

With a win Thursday, Fuqua will play in Saturday’s 11 a.m. state championship game, also at Shepherd Stadium.

On the softball side, the No. 2 Lady Falcons routed visiting No. 7 Broadwater Academy 15-0 on Tuesday, setting up a rematch of last year’s state title game in this year’s state semifinals. Fuqua is set to take on No. 3 Southampton Academy on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Dinwiddie Sports Complex in Sutherland.

Fuqua’s baseball and softball teams both reached their respective state title games last year, losing to Southampton Academy 6-5 and 3-1, respectively.

The Falcons baseball team will not get a chance to take on the Raiders again, as they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Brunswick Academy.

The Lady Falcons faced Southampton once this year during the regular season on the road and lost 5-4.

“I didn’t feel we played well that game,” Lady Falcons Head Coach Mike Ford said.

He was clear on what needed to happen to get a win Thursday, though.

“We need to come focused and have a lot of energy and play our game,” he said. “That’s what we need to do. If we do that, I think we’ll do well.”
