It was an unusually difficult season for Prince Edward County High School’s varsity boys soccer team, lacking long-term experienced players and its standout, senior Chaney Sheehan, who was sidelined for much of the year due to a broken ankle. But the Eagles’ inexperienced players showed their growth this season in the Region 2A tournament, Sheehan was cleared to return to the lineup Monday, and No. 4 Prince Edward let host No. 1 Greensville County High School know in Monday’s quarterfinal that it is still a force to be reckoned with. The Eagles recovered from an early deficit against Greensville to take the game to triple overtime before the home team finally prevailed, 5-4.

“The effort, heart and fight of my team was unmatched today,” Prince Edward Head Coach Devin Pierce said. “To come back from being down two goals twice in one game speaks volumes of the drive of the Eagles. I am overly proud of my team for digging deep and overcoming the deficit. Their drive and willingness to work for one another was a key component of our success this season.”

Despite all the difficulties, Prince Edward finished the year with a solid overall record of 10-6-1.

The Eagles topped visiting No. 5 Bluestone High School 5-1 on Friday in the first round, benefiting from two goals by junior Angelo Militello, and one apiece from Cabrera, Cheyne and Lehman.
