Prince Edward County High School’s varsity softball team had a slow start to the season, but it has won six out of its last nine games heading into Tuesday’s showdown with Goochland High School.
Two of those six victories came earlier this week, with the Lady Eagles edging visiting Central Lunenburg High School 4-3 on Tuesday and topping visiting Bluestone High School 10-6 on Monday.
The run of success has brought Prince Edward’s overall record to 7-8.
The 2018 Lady Eagles feature a relative balance across the four classifications, including seniors Shauneice Beasley, Sarah Edwards and Abby Roach, juniors Katelyn Buchannan, Da’Mya Harris, Taylor Mackenzie Morris and Lauran Todt, sophomores Asia Edmonds and SaRoya Walton and freshmen T’Asia Beasley, Jaden Capati and Alyssa Robbins-Gullett.
Early in the season, Prince Edward Head Coach LaDonia Mujahid identified Shauneice Beasley, Edwards, Roach, Capati and T’Asia Beasley as big hitters.
As for who would contribute in the circle, Mujahid pointed to Shauniece Beasley and Capati.
“Shauneice is obviously a leader,” Mujahid said. “She can lead anywhere. In the circle, she’s like the glue that keeps everything and everyone together. Shauneice hits her spots, and she keeps the ball down so that better keeps the ball in the park and gives our defense a chance to kind of help her out.”
The coach praised Capati for the variety of pitches she can throw.
