Longwood University’s men’s golf team placed seventh Sunday out of nine teams competing in the Big South Championship played at the 7,120-yard, par 72 The Patriot at Grand Harbor in South Carolina.
The final round for the Lancers was highlighted by an even-par 72 performance from sophomore Brandon Weaver, who hit three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 13th hole. His low round helped him finish 21st individually, and he was joined in the top 25 by three teammates — senior Nick Contini, junior Jordan Boulton and junior Adam Szwed.
With his ninth round of the season of even-par or better, Weaver secured his seventh top 25 finish of the season, as he placed among the top 30 in the field in each of Longwood’s six tournaments this spring.
Longwood moved up one spot on the team leaderboard with a final round four-over par 292, as the Lancers closed the tournament with a 54-hole score of 295-305-292—895 (+31) to place seventh overall. Liberty University captured the team title with a three-round score of 16-under par (848).
“Today’s round is a much better day indication of where we are as a team,” said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman on Sunday. “I’m happy with the way we came back, especially after the way yesterday’s round ended. It would have been easy for us to pack it in and gone through the motions, but our guys showed that they take a lot pride in what they’re doing. I’m proud of them for that. Outside of the closing holes from yesterday, when we lost probably 15 or so shots, we did not play a bad tournament.”
