A brush fire in a wooded area off Slate River Mill Road in the Town of Dillwyn burned approximately 9 acres as firefighters sought to put out the fire.

According to Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jason Wharam, the fire took place at approximately 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Wharam said the cause of the fire is unknown.

He said Glenmore Volunteer Fire Department, Arvonia Volunteer Fire Department, Toga Volunteer Fire Department and the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) responded to the fire. Wharam said VDOF brought two bulldozers to extinguish the fire.

“The fire was put out with water and the help of the bulldozers putting a fire line around the edge of the fire,” Wharam said.

A fire line is a method used to slow the progress of a forest fire by clearing the forest floor of material that could strengthen the fire.
