Falcons overcome obstacles

Fuqua School’s varsity soccer team is doing things thus far this season that seem to defy the reality of the situation the squad finds itself in.

The Falcons are short on experience and players, but they are finding ways to win, having started the season with a 4-1 overall record.

Varsity and junior varsity players came together to help Fuqua field a varsity squad this year, and the roster features only 13 players.

“The team is very inexperienced right now,” said new Head Coach Sepehr Harandi. “We only have a few upperclassmen, and one of our better players is out, he’s been out for a while, he’s sick. So all the guys came together, and they’ve kind of picked up.”

Fuqua earned its first win of the season March 8 when it defeated visiting Southampton Academy 5-1.

In their next game March 26, the Falcons experienced their only loss so far this year, a 5-2 road defeat to Richmond Christian School. But Fuqua rebounded quickly, topping visiting Kenston Forest School 5-1 three days later.

In a rematch with Kenston Forest on April 10, the Falcons won 4-1 on the road, and April 18, they defeated visiting Blessed Sacrament Huguenot (BSH) Catholic School 4-3.

Fuqua was scheduled to visit BSH Catholic on Monday for a rematch.

The coed Falcons team features five seniors, four freshmen, two sophomores, one junior and one eighth-grader.

Harandi noted that two senior players have been out sick — Kevin Dunn and Silvia Omboni, so the team has been playing recently with no substitutes.

The coach made a point to cite that every player on the roster has contributed to the team’s success.

A standout among the contributors has been senior Jalen Patteson, who Harandi said has scored 18 goals across the Falcons’ five games.

“He’s definitely doing it for us offensively, but he’s not the only one,” the coach said. “We’ve had a few guys step up and play major roles. Our goalie, Ethan (Watson), he’s been doing very well, our back line, and then also a freshman, Ryan Ledger, he’s really stepped up, especially when Kevin’s been sick. He’s played in his position, and he’s played defense as well, so he’s kind of a role player for us and is doing a great job.”

Fuqua returns to action on the pitch Tuesday, May 1, at 4:30 p.m. against visiting Brunswick Academy.
