Embracing our students

This isn’t stated enough — this community has fantastic students.

The volume of announcements we receive about our elementary, middle and high school students, and the students from our two colleges, can often be overwhelming.

These students are making waves in their respective school bands, in their drama programs, in their robotics clubs, with programs such as the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and National FFA Organization, participating in the first ever Leadership Farmville Youth Summit recently and using their time, energies and talents to pour into area nonprofit organizations such as the Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity demonstrated by students at Prince Edward County Public Schools and Fuqua School.

Two students from Cumberland County High School and Fuqua Upper School, Autumn Holman and Irene Thornton, were two of eight participants recently selected to take part in the 2018 Washington Youth Tour by the Southside Electric Cooperative.

Thornton and Holman were considered among approximately 45 applicants in the 18 counties the SEC serves.

Participation among students at Hampden-Sydney College and Longwood University deserves noting.

The attention and interaction between students and Sen. Mark Warner during Warner’s recent visit to Hampden-Sydney was encouraging and engaging to read, as was seeing questions asked by Longwood students during a visit by journalist Susan Glasser last week.

I want to recognize students who may not have their names in the press, but whose academic success, care toward their communities and fellow students, and presence makes a difference in the lives of their teachers, peers and families every day.

To the students in this community, thank you so much for everything you do.

You matter. You always will. Our job and our goal is to state that as much as we can.
