Cancelled: primitive technology day Saturday

The Extension Office at Buckingham Courthouse (between the County Administration office and the Arts Center) is offering Gardening Tips and Topics on April 14 starting at 10 a.m. Whether your garden is a few acres or a flower pot on the porch, come learn how to make the most of it.

The session begins with small space gardening. From the soil up, learn about the best plants for small spaces, watering, feeding for healthy growth, pest management, and harvesting and storing the crop. Master gardeners will be available to answer questions between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. There is no signup charge or fee. The Extension Office is located at 54 Administration Lane. Did you know that Virginia Cooperative Extension-Buckingham office has a Family and Nutrition Program Assistant, Christina Knowsley, who teaches classes for adults, and youth, with limited resources? Classes focus on basic nutrition, physical activity, safe food handling and thrifty food shopping. She incorporates cooking recipes into the lessons. The last club meeting before the big show for the Buckingham 4-H Livestock show is April 19, at 4 p.m. at the B.A.R.N. facility at Buckingham Courthouse area. The meeting will focus on clipping the show animals, as well as grading. Scott Talley, a VDACS grader, will lead the program discussion. All the hard work of these young people will culminate in the Piedmont Area Jr. Blackstone on April 28. The Buckingham Extension Office is hiring two paid interns this summer. The first position is full time at 40 hours week/10 weeks. It involves working with agriculture and natural resources (ANR), the Peter Francisco Soil and Water District (SWCD), and 4-H. The second position is part time and is mostly 4-H, with some ANR and SWCD as well. If interested, or know someone who is, contact (434) 969-4261.

Primitive Technology Day has been cancelled due to weather. The event was set for Saturday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Historic Village at Lee Wayside. No admission charge. Great event for the children. Sponsored by Historic Buckingham.

Cloverbud 4-H camp sign ups are now underway at the Virginia Cooperative Extension-Buckingham office. Get registrations in before April 17, for the early bird deadline to save some cash. 4-H Camp is for youth ages 9-13, as of Sept. 30. Cloverbud Weekend is for youth ages 5-8, as of Sept. 30. Teen leaders, ages 14-19 as of Jan. 1, 2018, and adult leaders may apply to attend camp. Training is required. The next Buckingham TRIAD meeting will be meeting on April 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall on Route 60 in Buckingham County. Jordan Miles of the Piedmont Senior Resources will be the guest speaker. Light refreshments will be provided.

A voter registrar will be at Buckingham County High School on Wednesday, April 11, from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to register eligible citizens to vote. In order to register, students must be at least 18 years of age by Nov. 6 and be able to provide their Social Security number and home address. Spring auction and car show will take place at the Arvonia Fire Department on Saturday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Come out and support the fire department. These folks come to our rescue in the times of most need. Show your appreciation.
