Haney earns RBC Athlete of the Week honor

Former Fuqua School softball standout Katie Haney has been making a strong early impression on the diamond as a freshman at Richard Bland College (RBC). She was recently named the RBC Athletics Department’s Athlete of the Week for the period of March 13-19, as announced in a department press release Wednesday.
“It’s an honor to represent my school and be recognized for my hard work,” she said in the release.
The infielder was cited as leading the Statesmen (11-6) in four games played, going 7-for-12 to produce a batting average of .583, including one home run, one triple, four runs, two RBIs and one stolen base. She was 2-for-3 with her first collegiate home run, scoring two runs with one RBI during a 6-3 setback in game two at NJCAA Division I Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC) in South Carolina on March 18 after going 2-for-3 with one run during an 8-0 win in game one at SMC.
Haney was also 2-for- 3 with a triple and one RBI during a 9-4 setback in game two against visiting No. 14 Florence-Darlington Technical College on March 16, following a 1-for-3 effort with one run and a stolen base during a 4-3 setback in game one. School officials noted Wednesday that Haney has started seven of the nine games she has played this season, batting .471 (8- for-17) with one home run, one triple, five runs, two RBIs and one stolen base. She adds a .471 on-base percentage, a .765 slugging percentage and an .889 fielding percentage.
“I like our team dynamic,” Haney said in the release. “I feel we have such a diverse and talented team, and we work really well together.”
The release noted that Haney was named to the Athletic Director’s Academic Excellence List for the 2017 fall semester as well, attaining a semester grade point average of 4.0. The Statesmen were scheduled to visit Pitt Community College for a doubleheader on Thursday, and they will play another doubleheader Saturday at Surry Community College starting at 1 p.m.
