Film screening supports SPCA

A night at the movies or a stop for pizza could mean enormous support for the Southside SPCA, Fundraising Coordinator Steve Smelcer said.

Smelcer said the SPCA was able to work with the film company Fun Academy Motion Pictures to hold a special screening of the film, “Sgt. Stubby, an American Hero,” at Sunchase Cinema Thursday, April 12 at 7 p.m.

The film will be screened ahead of its release on April 13. “Sgt. Stubby” is an animated film about a homeless dog who, after being rescued by a soldier, stumbles into World War I and becomes a hero. The film will feature voice talents of Logan Lerman and Helena Bonham Carter.

“You can bring the whole family out to it,” Smelcer said.

Smelcer said proceeds from the screening will benefit the Southside SPCA.

“They are going to donate a portion of the ticket proceeds to the SPCA,” Smelcer said. “We will be set up in the lobby. We’ll have some special raffles going on and we’ll have a prize wheel, T-shirts, doing some fun stuff alongside the event.”

He noted that in tandem with the screening, Pizza World, located adjacent to the theater, will have a daylong fundraiser from noon until 9 p.m. where the restaurant will donate 20 percent of its proceeds to the SPCA. The event, which will have raffles and other activities, is aptly named “Pawsome Pizza.”

“I just thought this was really cool that all of this comes together,” Smelcer said.
