A graduate of Prince Edward County High School has launched a clothing company with the intent to celebrate creativity and self-expression.
Tamera Langhorne recently opened online store Arematia Clothing Co., which has a selection of padded jackets, letterman jackets, graphic tees and tracksuits.
“I was inspired by images and clothing ideas from the 80s and 90s,” Langhorne said. “I also wanted to incorporate color blocking with the latest trends.”
She said for her, the material and patterns can speak volumes.
“You wouldn’t think that a color can make you feel secure, but color speaks personality and mood,” Langhorne said. “I love the idea of bold and nuanced colors on clothing.”
Langhorne graduated from Prince Edward County High School in 2013 with honors.
She said the name for the company was inspired from two names.
“The name was derived from both my first and middle name, Tamera Tia,” Langhorne said, “with my first name spelled backward and middle name forward.” Langhorne, who graduated from Old Dominion University in 2016, said she received inspiration from studying design magazines and websites, and has worked with several vendors and manufacturers to learn about the proper fabric and patterns for the clothing. She said her favorite pieces are her jackets. “I have always loved great quality jackets,” Langhorne said. “My favorite jacket brands are Helly Hansen, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and North Face. I try to incorporate my childhood likings of all and design them into my ideal perfect jacket.”
To encourage future clothing designers, Langhorne said, “you must have a true passion for designing to be successful. Remember that inspiration comes from within and remember you are the designer and your work of art represents you. Anyone can be successful at anything in life with discipline and determination.”
