A house fire in the 1500 block of River Road in Cumberland County on Friday night resulted in one fatality and the displacement of a male occupant. According to Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Ryan Bates, the person who died has not been identified yet. They are currently with a medical examiner in Richmond awaiting identification.
Bates said when fire crews initially responded, at approximately 11:15 p.m., crews were notified that someone was trapped inside. The crews had attempted to break through a window of a room that was believed to not have been touched by fire at that point. He said as they made entry into the window they were forced back out due to heavy fire.
The man, who was displaced, was transported to Centra Southside Community Hospital. Bates said he didn’t know whether the man had sustained injuries or not. Randolph Volunteer Fire Department, Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department and Farmville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire and were on scene until 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Bates said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
