High Bridge fortification tour
Published 8:39 am Tuesday, December 12, 2017
Visit High Bridge Trail State Park on Sunday for a tour around one of the fortifications built to guard the approaches to the bridge. The tour will run from 1-3 p.m. and will begin at the fort near the Camp Paradise parking lot.
Hear how fortifications were constructed with the help of a labor force of conscripted free Negros, how Camp Paradise got its name and the forts’ role in the defense of High Bridge during the battle on April 7, 1865.
The fort is located on the Prince Edward side of High Bridge off the south shoulder of the trail. Closest access is from Camp Paradise. Those visitors who park at River Road will need to cross High Bridge, and continue to walk, approximately, an additional eighth of a mile beyond the bridge to the fort access path on the right.
