Opal Smith Carter

Opal Jean Smith Carter, 81, of Gladstone, Va. departed to be with the Lord peacefully on Friday, Nov. 24, 2017 at her home. She was the beloved wife of Charles Jesse Carter, Sr. for 63 years.

Born in Lynchburg, Va. on Dec. 11, 1935, she was a daughter of the late Beulah Gobble and David Lee Smith. She was a member of Liberty Chapel Baptist Church and retired from the USDA farm service agency.

In addition to her husband Charles, she is survived by two sons, C.J. Carter and friend Cynthia Goggin, Robert Carter and wife, Valerie; a daughter, Judy Carter Thacker and husband, Garrett Milton Thacker Sr., all of Gladstone; four grandchildren, Kalen Bauman, Gavin Bauman and wife, Beth, Justin Bauman, Michelle Smith and husband, Micah; one great-grandson, Lucas Bauman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Murna Franklin, Frances Franklin, Kathleen Brown, Etta Jennings, and Verna Zopp and a brother and sister-in-law, David M. and Bessie Carter Smith.

The family would like to thank her caregivers Sandra, Carolyn, and Amanda.

Opal was known to all for her love of faith and family. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing hymns. Her cherished memory as a sweet, dedicated, and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother will endure within the community, church, and family farm in Buckingham, Va.

A funeral was held at 2 p.m., on Monday Nov. 27, 2017 at Liberty Chapel Baptist Church, lead by Pastor Shannon Harris and Pastor Art Cavanaugh. Burial was in the church cemetery.

The family received friends at Robinson Funeral Home from 5 until 7 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 26, and at all other times at the residence at 367 Old Thirteen Road Gladstone, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Liberty Chapel Baptist Church.
